WWII hero and aviation pioneer Doris Tracy remembered

Somber gathering honors La Veta’s Doris Tracy

Mourners gathered Tuesday afternoon at the La Veta Cemetery to honor and respect long-time La Veta resident Doris Tracy, who passed away July 29, 2010 at the age of 90.

Tracy received full military honors by the Honor Guard from Peterson Air Force Base—recognizing Tracy’s service to the country during World War II.

Tracy was one of 1,000 women who volunteered to be a Women’s Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) during the war. Their service was only recently recognized by the United States Congress, as each member earned a Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony on March 10, 2010.

Tracy’s daughters Glenna Lee Tracy and Julie Geiser of Alamosa, Colo. attended the service, along with family and friends. Pastor Tom Janoski officiated the memorial service.
